Chippendale at Harewood

Habitually Chic's wonderful post on the Chinese wallpaper at Harewood House reminded me of another one of this princely palace's marvels: The Chippendale Pelmet.

Look carefully - the festooned valance with gold fringe is actually carved and painted pine! It is one of seven in the gallery of Harewood, and made by either Chippendale Senior or Junior, circa 1780.

How fantastic- they must be even more awe inspiring in person!

Years ago I was in an apt. at the Dakota in NY that had once belonged to Frederick Victoria. And there, still installed on two windows was a pair of fitted carved, gessoed wooden curtains with cording and tassels that were equally as amazing. They were painted white and gathered at intervals in the manner or French 18th century curtains -really extraordinary. I believe this is something Frederick P.Victoria & Son still does upon request.
